The American environmental policy

The aim of the environmental policy is to safeguard the environment and its resources for the future generations while trying as much as possible to minimize the interference to the effectiveness of commerce and the freedom of the American people and distributing the weight of environmental costs. This policy has experienced a counterattack due to the high costs associated with these regulations, from the business and politically conserved interests and limitation to environmental regulatory budgets that in turn retard the efforts to protect the environment.

From the BBC The US and climate change, stated that the US that contains about four percent of the world population and produces about twenty-five percent of all carbon dioxide emissions while Britain emits three percent just exact as India that has about 15 times as many people as the US. US has the largest number of cars due to its population and the good road network. These cars consume a large mass of petrol which is immediately equated to the effect on air pollution.

The US has a very large population as compared to other countries. Therefore, the household wastes and disposal is very large considerably. Also to feed her population, the US has adopted some agricultural chemicals that help increase the yield. An example is the use of the Methyl Bromide that kills pesticides. This chemical is very dangerous to the ozone layer that protects the suns radiation from being intense. Due to all these environmental accelerators, things have grown much worse over the long-term, as rising health care costs and the aging population worsen the fiscal problem. This means that there would be an increase in taxes and or reduction in the spending of this big population to keep the GDP ratio at current ratio.

Due to the environmental degradation, there have been a number of politically infeasible measures that have an impact on the US policies and its economy. These may include increase of the consumption tax which this discourages the consumption by the consumers thus lowering the taxes received by the government as revenue. Also, raising of the eligibility age for the social security and medicine and means of testing all entitlements. This facilitates poor health service for the US population of which the economy depends on. Finally, there is the elimination of the tax expenditures, such as, mortgage interest deduction or the tax exclusion of the employer-provided health insurance.

One of the major components that have greatly affected the healths and economy is mercury. There has been a loss of 8.7 billion annually in productivity, of which 1.3 billion is directly due to the mercury emissions from the power plants. This means that the economy has to use a lot of money in treating her patients, the money that could have been used to put in place into other projects for the economy. Due to the emission of mercury, a number of children have been born with the mercury inside their blood systems. This means that the health and the societal costs are likely to be much higher. This is associated with the loss of the intelligence minds of the affected future generation. Therefore, there is a grater need to expand the environmental regulation and imposition of laws to safeguard the US economy for now and the future generation.
