Money is the main cause of divorce

In the modern world, divorce has become the norm and many studies have indicated a surge in the number of divorce cases in many parts of the world. The increase in the number of divorce rates has highlighted a need in the society to understand the root causes of divorce in order to explain the rising numbers in divorce levels. There are many causes of divorce that vary between couples and the circumstances but the number one culprit of the causes of divorce in the world is money (Jet, 1996).

Jet observes that in one   survey that was prepared by Citibank, the survey highlighted that about a half of all marriages all end up in breaking and divorce. The survey also revealed that the major factor that was linked to the high number of divorce were financial difficulties. Jet records that the major issue about money that causes divorce is incompatibility in finances between the couple in the marriage. He also observes that the effect of the disparity in finances coupled with the society predetermined financial roles for men and women all work together to fuel conflict in marriage leading to divorce (1996)

Jet has the point that the nature of the society has changed and more women are now earning their income while most men want to maintain the status quo of having the control of finances and maintaining the role leading the households in many societies across the world which is causing disagreements in the management of finances in the home which fuels the divorce rate (1996). Jet also observes that the issue of mismatch in finances is aggregated by a deficiency in communication between the couple in marriages about the use of finances in the home. He observes that in many marriages, money is unmentionable topic and is not well discussed in a majority of the marriages. When there is no communication about finances in the marriage ,there is also lack  of harmony and unity in  the use of  finances in the home which leads to disagreements because the couple does not cooperate in the sharing of household financial obligations which eventually leads to divorce (Jet,  1996) .This indicates that money itself  is not the cause of  divorce by  itself but the way the couple  handles their  money in the relationship can be a factor in the break up of the marriage.

According to article base.com, money issues are major factors that are responsible for an upsurge in the height of stress in a marriage .The website records that in most marriage, there are always problems and disagreements that arise within it but in most cases the couples reconcile. When there are money issues such as the lack of money and problems in its use and control, the disagreements in the marriage are exacerbated due to the effect of money adding the stress levels in the marriage (2010). In cases where there is no sufficient money for the couple and there are debts to be catered for everyday lives of a couple, the marriage becomes laden with stress and the possibility of the development of arguments arises and this can cause an eventual collapse of the marriage and divorce .Disagreements about money can cause divorce in a marriage even when the couples in a marriage are still in love with each other (articlebase.com, 2009).

Money is a major cause of conflict in the home and it major factor that fuels divorce. (Allbestarticles.com, 2010).This site outlines some  aspects of money such as  the issue of imbalanced obligations in the sharing of  family financial obligations , disparities in the  level of income of  the couple, the issue of couples not being open about their finances and lack of financial accountability between the couple as the  aspects of money that triggers conflicts in marriage which eventually  results in divorce(2010).Jet explains the concept of disparities in income as a major cause of conflict because the issue of control of income becomes a major issue of conflict between a couple. The factor causes tension in marriage especially when one partner is mishandling the income which causes a conflict in the control, of finances between the couple .The fight over the control of finances eventually leads to exacerbations of the other normal disagreements between the couple resulting into major disagreements which can result to divorce (1996).  Another factor of money that is explained by Jet is that money is often used as a sign of power in a marriage which impacts on the harmony of the home through intensifying the fight for power and influence in the marriage especially at this era where in most cases both the wife and the husband all work and generate incomes. Jet explains that money can be used by one partner to control the other since it has an element of authority that is attached to it. Therefore the couple in the marriage each identify themselves in terms of money which can fuel disagreements and divorce. This struggle for power eventually leads to disagreements which can lead to dissolution of the marriage as each of the partner in the marriage fights to have greater influence and control in the marriage (1996).

In the case of lack of money by one of the spouses in a marriage, there is possibility of increase in the stress levels in a marriage which triggers disagreements (allbestraticles.com, 2010). Jet (1996) also observed this phenomena where the   deficiency in finances by one of the partner in the marriage can trigger disagreements in marriage because the anticipations of the other partner may not be achieved by the other partner who lacks the finances Such incidences are common when one of the partner is self-centered and does not support the other which can cause conflicts and the divorce in marriage. in summary, it is apparent that financial difficulties and  the fight for control finances in a marriage are a major factor that fuels conflict in marriage which eventually leads to dissolve. In my opinion the contribution of money as a cause of dissolve arises out of the lack of proper communication and the lack of compromise about finances between the partners in a marriage. In conclusion money itself is not a cause of divorce by itself but acts as a source and a factor that fuels disagreements in the marriage.  The problems and conflicts about money that leads to divorce are all related  to how well the couple in the marriage handle their finances in the marriage .It is therefore important that couples in a marriage to be open and discuss about the use of finances in order to avoid the conflicts about money that leads to divorce.
